WrestleMania XXVII is coming to Atlanta April 3, 2011.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. CEO Vince McMahon, and Atlanta Sports Council President Gary Stokan made the announcement today at the Georgia Dome, which will play host to the professional wrestling event. Ken Stewart, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, and and Rich McKay, president of the Atlanta Falcons, were also at the announcement, as were several wrestling superstars and Falcons football team members.

WrestleMania is the flagship event of Stamford, Conn.-based World Wrestling Entertainment (NYSE: WWE), a kind of “Super Bowl” of professional wrestling.

But the events surrounding WrestleMania stretch for five days, including WrestleMania Axxess, a four-day fan fest, which will take place at the Georgia World Congress Center, a Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and Monday Night Raw, which will be held at Philips Arena the night after WrestleMania.

Atlanta sporting events "contribute significantly to the economy," Stokan said. Over the past 10 years, sporting events have generated more than $1.8 billion in economic impact, he said.

WrestleMania is expected to bring in $50 million in economic impact, "especially to those in hospitality and travel industry," said Reed, who said he "is a bit of a wrestling fan, so I will be in the seats."

Atlanta has a rich history of professional wrestling, said McMahon, who noted the old Atlanta Auditorium used to host events.

But wrestling of old is nothing like wrestling today with "the drama, the soap opera elements, the entertainment, the athleticism," he said.

McMahon said his job is to "spread good will and have fun, and that's what
