The Ford plant on Chicago's South Side will start producing a new police car next year -- a new boost to the site that will produce a new version of the Ford Explorer SUV later this year.
The new cruiser, called the Police Interceptor, will replace the Crown Victoria-based police cruiser at the end of 2011. The Interceptor will come in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive versions, has available bulletproof doors, can withstand a 75 mph rear crash, includes vinyl back seats and floors that can be hosed down, and features plates built into the front seat to prevent cops from getting stabbed.
